FWIW a poster's comment on Artisan caught my eye on a War Zone article " San Antonio Class Looks Very Different After Shedding Its Stealthy Masts", not very complimentary to Artisan due its high beamwidth at longer ranges. Patrick Chase 9 hours ago This seems a little misleading: Even the...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
£105mn pa running and maintenance costs for all 8 OPVs including the 5 globally deployed - extremely good value for money. https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/costs-and-locations-of-british-patrol-ship-deployments/ How much with a hull stretch and a hanger? Sea Giraffe 1X would be higher on the list at...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
A dock would be a far more flexible option with greater utility.
LCAC would be an expensive route to take.

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
The top priority is the first design so both Albions and Argus can be retired ASAP. This is because the Albions are old, require too many crew to propery man, and lack hangars. We have options for the second design for RFA including variety of Enforcer and BMT designs. The Albion vessels are about ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
The simple fact is we had the perfect balance of flight deck and dock space with Ocean , 1 x LPD and 3 LSD's and we let it go When all things are considered a completely conventional Amphibious force may still be the way to go. Before even beginning on the MRSS design or considering an Enforcer LPD...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
An AAW variant of the T26 is a no brainer and costs can be shared with the RAN and RCN. Given the new frigate factory, another six AAW variants could be achieved without Gaps with the T45s. However given the threat, there is no logical reason not to repurpose the five T31s also to become AAW ships,...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Well hopefully that sunlight is shone on why land attack capability was not funded for the escort fleet and what was being protected by that decision. Also interesting reading the good rear admirals somewhat disparaging comments about naval strike missile was that possibly because he was pushing fo...

The issue is the RN has the wrong ships to make LSG/LRG work effectively and efficiently. If they want to make this strategy work then Albions and bay class need replacing with the MRSS something like the Enforcer 15628 https://media.damen.com/image/upload/v1694075865/catalogue/defence-and-security...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
I wonder if they are now exploring 16 cell mk41 to give the maximum 64 CAMM/CAMM-ER The T45 with 48x Aster 30, 64x CAMM and 8x NSM would be one of the most capable escorts afloat. The Mk8 really needs to be deleted and replaced with the 57mm when the new VLS cells are fitted. Indeed and consider re...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
Don’t see how we can claim sweet spots or the like without saying what you want these ships to achieve. Ocean for example was configured with her 6 medium helicopter spots and 4 landing craft to simultaneously deliver one company by air and one by sea. If you planing on landing a company by air wit...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
But if you are doing typically company level ops with your LRG, are having few or no LCUs really an issue? There is zero chance for example that the Argus+Bay force will ever do anything above two Coys with very limited vehicles. Still need to get the Vikings, Coyotes, Jackals and L118 ashore. Mayb...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
The problem is the entire amphibious fleet no longer fits the doctrine. If the Albions or Bays had been fitted with hangars this problem would not exist to this extent. Unfortunately both classes are too old to really justifying conversion and would still have have shortcomings. The solution is to ...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)
The RN doesn’t have the crew or funding to operate them, it makes sense to mothball them. Focus LRGs around Bays and Argus. I believe Lyme Bay had Ocean’s command centre I’m not sure what the other bays and Argus now have.

Apart from the fact you can fit a 2 LCU in a 13,000 tonne ship but 2 LCAC requires a 20,000 tonne ship.Poiuytrewq wrote: ↑13 Sep 2023, 16:33
The transition from LCU to LCAC could unlock the entire MRSS conundrum.
