Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Dragonfire is a 55kW system....37 separate 1.5kW lasers. T31 has more than enough power. Not sure if they're looking for additional instantaneous power storage e.g. a supercapacitor or flywheel

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Gawd...still banging on about T31 as a 'light frigate' (with 12-24 CAMM). Yup, would be folly in the Middle East now. But I think the Admiralty got the memo a year or two back. Hence the move to Mk41s. If they display more common sense and find some trivial quididge they give all five 32 cells a la...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

That’s just your bias coming out, off it must be this because I like it. If your principally fighting Russia the answer at sea it will largely be our submarines and maritime patrol aircraft in the Atlantic. The Russian submarines beyond there ssbns are largely some modern ssks not ssns. Most of it ...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

Yes, but so what? The RN was never going to go with the exact Danish CMS/sensor/weapon/defensive aids fit. They largely derisked that lot by bringing Thales into the Babcock team and the team specifying Thales kit for the latter, by and large. Where non Thales stuff has been spec'ed then it has prob...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

Are we getting APAR radar and C-FLEX Combat Management System for our Type 31's? Nope, Thales NS100 medium range 4D radar and Thales TACTICOS CMS. Same company supplying both (unlike the Danes) so you'd expect no integration issues. Same with all the EO sensors. In the future Thales are also prime ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Indeed because the vehicle you posted an image off has a gross vehicle weight limit which is less that the weight which can be lifted by chinook. So you are still missing the point. So regardless of what configuration it is(gun, cab whatever) it should still be lift able by chinook. Somehow I doubt...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

Have you noticed that when a fastjet squadron deploys as a squadron they go with 8 jets be they tornado, typhoon, or f35 even though there peace time compliment is 12. For intense operations they may add 1 or 2 additional jets for fwd deployed maintenance spares. The problem with comparing what the...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

Well I would say we need to get away from the Norm that the RAF operate as these jets are and should be for the Carriers firstly given a front line number of 59 the aim should be to deploy 20 jets to the duty carrier meaning that when jets/ Sqn's are not deployed to a carrier they should be in main...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

I recall seeing a defence committee hearing where then ACM Wigston stated that ~ 20% of the entire fleet should be expected to be in deep maintenance i.e. of planned 74 ~ 59-60 would be front line strength I also think that Marham only has the infrastructure for 4 sqns i.e. 1 OCU + 3 frontline. All...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Would you be prepared to lose a Type 26 frigate in a minefield? No I wouldn’t, but this whole conversation is about operating off board systems in high threat environments, not to purposely sail through a minefield. They have to be relatively close and are generally the first ship thru. If you’re n...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Changing the approach is always inefficient. However, sticking with the wrong approach is just dumb IMO - I see no good explanation why RN shall sell 5 T31. RN has such "tier-2" level tasks to do, KIPION. NATO fleet contribution and/or FRE tasks will be also good for T31. If now is 2015 a...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

]I actually don't disagree with your high end argument. I'm arguing that you can turn T31 into a pretty strong local area AAW/ASuW frigate/escort (a damn site better than a T23 GP) and task group goalkeeper/potentially networked missile silo. A silk purse from a sow's ear. I also believe that high ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Should the RN get its future hull budget, then rather than then build the 'missing' Small Ships with the disadvantages I see (upthread) I'd go with 5x A140 MNP type multi-role UxV motherships rather than ~ 2 extra T26 as Repulse prefers. Sure, T26 can do blue water ASW in addition, but in a resourc...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Any UxV mothership needs to be substantially self escorting, imo, and that means more than a 40mm/57mm gun as proposed by Aitken of BMT, in his RINA paper of 2018 that someone referenced. Otherwise the 'Channel stand-off' UxV mothership (as defined) needs an escort and you're then into 'Area Stando...
