Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Tomahawk - no UK surface ship can currently use it, so why do we need them? The T26 will get them (or a successor system) when they are finished. As for the sub-launched version - probably only useful against an opponent without access to satellite surveillance - rather gives the position of the su...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
My reading of that article is that Mr Campbell said that other designs could enter but the specific mention of T26 was not his own comment and instead speculation (whether informed or otherwise) from the author. Hopefully this is realistic but if so the USN project has moved a very long way from wha...

be able to mask where the signal comes from That's why 'zapping' it at the receiving end is the easiest solution? I don't know anything about how drones and their signals actually work so could be completely wrong but I would be surprised if the signal controlling a standard toy or commercial drone...

Re: U.K. UAV's/Drones
I might need to reach for a tinfoil hat and obviously there are numerous other possibilities (with the most likely simply being someone gets their jollies from ruining other people's Christmas jollies) but I can't help thinking that there is a country which is plenty angry at the UK, views causing d...

Re: Dreadnought Class SSBN
Usual process would have been for the French to build and name such an SSBN, and for us to Re-name her after taking her as a "Prize" following misfortune at sea. I can see thee attraction of saving the construction cost of a fourth Dreadnought Class, but I don't think Trident D5 would fit...

Why aren’t they naming the ships in order? The full stop (to the sorry saga) has to be put somewhere... and leave no doubt ;) Agreed, naming the 8th ship HMS London at this stage makes it a tiny bit harder to subsequently order less then eight ships and given that doing it this way doesn't cost the...

They are just annoyed that they have to keep firing expensive missiles at drones worth a few hundred dollars each without being able to prevent the attacks happening (and qu...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Assuming the structure is strong enough to take it and any negative impact on stealth isn't deemed that important is there anything to stop a small number of CAAM silos (say six on each side) being placed on the T45 hangar roof? Might need to move antennas and it is a bit close to the search radar b...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
If you cut 2 T26, you can build 6 T31 with no additional money. Increased number of escorts? To be fair if cutting two T26 meant a guaranteed order of ten to twelve T31 (preferably divided roughly in half between an austere patrol version and a better equipped ASW version) I wouldn't th...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
I agree that sometimes their capabilities aren't top notch, but they are GOOD ENOUGH for their intended purpose. French Navy never had any serious intent to fight the Soviet Navy, so Clem and Foch ( with Crusaders and Etandards ) were good enough for: a) giving illusion of French grandeur and b) hi...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Has Queen Elizabeth's actual empty / light-loaded displacement been officially confirmed at any stage? I ask because she was always generally quoted as being 65,000 tonnes until a couple of years ago when most articles started to state 70,000 but recent articles I have read seem to have reverted to ...

Re: Australian Defence Force
Is there any confirmation as to whether a decision has been taken and not yet published or is it that the meeting didn't reach a final decision and further information has been requested from the bidders, more input sought from the RAN etc?

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Noticed this article as well. This does not sound like permanently forward basing. More like 12-18 month deployments? "An RN spokesperson told Jane’s that, from 2019, the Type 23 frigates “would be deployed for a longer duration than the current six- to nine-month [rotations]”. While the ships...

Re: Bahrain - UK Naval Support Facility (HMS Jufair)
Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere but if so I haven't seen it. According to this Telegraph article a Type 23 Frigate is going to be based at HMS Jufair and presumably if that is a success a Type 31 will be based there in the future: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/05/24/britain-send-...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]
Hi, I would also build 2 stretched (and if possible hull strengthened and widened for stability) T45 cruisers. Swap the 114mm for a 127mm, fill the gap in the Sylver VLS with more Sylver cells to increase the number of Asters and then lengthen the bow to create space behind that for a 24 cell Mk41 V...
