Not cancelled. He wanted to cancel it. This is confirmation we are not cancelling it.

Yes you are correct, in fact they were originally price at 1.4 billion but Boeing wanted more.

2 billion GBP for 14 chinooks

Sheesh

Well at least they won’t have a door to blow out mid flight.

And this is the day after a Boeing whistleblower “suicided”…

"According to UK MoD data the RAF has a current fleet of 59 Chinook HC5/HC6/HC6A helicopters, of which 39 were in service as at 1 April 2023."

So as of say 2028, how many will we have in the active fleet? Do these new ones replace old one?

So 38 frames are old, 14 will be replaced with new one, 9 will be retired without replacement. With 14 new, 36 should be operational plus some of 15 older frames which would eventually need to be replaced or just retired.

These seem rather expensive, is the UK being taken for a ride by Boeing again?

Seems about right. We paid $CAN 2.3B (or roughly GBP$1.4B) for 15 airframes, 10+ years ago. If you factor in 10 years of "defence" inflation, that seems like a fair price. Ours are also the "ER" versions, so it's pretty close to an apples-to-apples comparison.

For those interested there is on bbc iPlayer a two part documentary to mark the 30th anniversary of ZD576

Titled Dead men don’t talk

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... ophic-loss

I think it deserves the widest possible viewing so it’s never allowed to happen again, so I’m posting it here.
