River Class (OPV) (RN)
Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
I think each capability has it's place depending on the tasking. For EEZ patrol, SAR and HADR, it's more about survey and surveillance, so unarmed commercially derived fixed-wing and rotary drones on a River would be adequate - for Op Atalanta and the Gulf, a T31 with S100 and/or ScanEagle would be a better fit, with manned helicopter for use when needed.

I just glad you're not running things.

Anything that does not directly support those 2 should be dropped. Survey vessels directly support subs for example, and ASW escorts direct support the Carriers.
Patrol and presence ships = scrapped.

Quality issues with HMS Forth - doesn’t sound too major but enough to be embarrassing to BAE.

The 'Bolt heads cut off and then glued back on' bit seem to be quite worrying, where else has someone done a dodgy trader routine?
And I wonder how much BAE has charged the taxpayer for the glue.

Zero. They delivered the ship within the contract, which was signed even before the 1st steel cut. Everything happened later is not affecting the cost. That's all.WhiteWhale wrote:And I wonder how much BAE has charged the taxpayer for the glue.
If it was cut and glue, or if only cut no glued, or even for the repair, no additional money.
This is my understanding.
Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
It makes the whole B2 procurement look even more ridiculous. We could have had 8 Avengers if B2 had not happened, giving us a useful 22 escort fleet.

The SNP idiot doesn't seem to realize that he's ripping Scottish workers and just bolstering the case to build future ships in England.Repulse wrote:Quality issues with HMS Forth - doesn’t sound too major but enough to be embarrassing to BAE.

Anyone who thinks Bae initiated or sanctioned gluing on bolt heads needs to have their heads examined. Its a lazy/malicious worker or two. And a crappy quality inspection afterwards. It won't be hard to find out the culprit(s) and they'll be quietly fired.

Correct. All repairs are under warranty just like with a new car.donald_of_tokyo wrote:Zero. They delivered the ship within the contract, which was signed even before the 1st steel cut. Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Rrivals to River OPV and Venari 85 MRV.
Damen OPV for Pakistan Navy. Not Crossover, but can carry 2 ISO container below the flight deck.
1800t, 90m.

Also, looking in the Daman page, I found some thing interesting. A rival to BMT Venari 85.
https://products.damen.com/en/ranges/mu ... essel-3600 It is more a PSV. 85m, 3600t, 16kt speed, has a huge mission deck/bay with large crane.

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
It shows again how limited the RB2 design is when deployed outside the EEZ when compared to rival OPV's.donald_of_tokyo wrote:Rrivals to River OPV and Venari 85 MRV.
The hanger between the twin funnels design that we discussed previously appears to be the way most Navies are going now.
A different angle,
Much more useful than the Rivers with the embarked helicopter and space for deploying multiple outboard systems from the covered working deck under the flight deck.
With a small stretch and the crane added to the stern this design becomes truly multipurpose at the expense of the stern ramp. This to me should be the template to follow for future RN OPV's or possibly the MHPC programme. These should be the presence ships and leave the Frigates to do what frigates do best.

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
again the the last image with the covered working deck and and crane on the stern is what I would hope for from the MHPC program as for the the B2 Rivers as said if the RN were to buy around 20-30 Camcopter S-100 fitted with I Master radar and operated out of a container by a NAS this could give the Rivers a big step up in capability for a very low cost in real terms this same system could also be operated from the bays when working with the MCMs or with the marines when working in land which is in my book a lot of capability and flexibility for say 10 to 15 million pounds
Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Could a system such as VLS Hellfire or alternatives be fitted to the River 2 without loss of existing capability (aside from the fairly useless crane)?

Probably, but what scenario would call for such weapons?james k wrote:Could a system such as VLS Hellfire or alternatives be fitted to the River 2 without loss of existing capability (aside from the fairly useless crane)?

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
if the crane was to be removed a lot of stuff could be fitted up to Harpoon however the crane might just start to be a good idea with the new MCM kit and so on plus you could probably fit 2 x 3 ExLS one on each side of the crane without removing it but as above you will be asked why

Could fit all sorts to it if we wanted, just look at Thailand's plans as an example.
I don't know why we would want to, unless the Dutch get out of hand again!

Just change the gun to a 57mm and that’ll do nicely for a Global Patrol Sloop

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
makes me sick both her and Seven are needed now as there is no direct replacement for over a year as Forth will replace Clyde clearly the job they been doing for past 16 years dose not need doing anymore in the eyes of HMG
Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
I saw another Batch 1 River class at the southern end of No.2 basin during my harbour trip last week. Might have been Severn, I don't know for sure.
