In July, the federal government announced South Korea's Hanwha had been awarded a multi-billion-dollar deal to construct new Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs), beating a bid from German company Rheinmetall.

Just weeks before the IFV decision was revealed, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used a visit to Berlin to announce Australia would supply more than 100 Rheinmetall Boxer heavy weapon carriers to Germany from 2025.

Overnight, Germany's Business Insider publication has reported government sources in Berlin as saying "the procurement of new Boxers planned jointly with Australia has been stopped" following the decision to award the larger IFV contract to Hanwha.

A multi-million-pound subcontract has been awarded to HUBER+SUHNER, to supply radio frequency and low frequency cable harnesses for the British Army's Boxer MIV Programme.

HERISAU, Switzerland, Sept. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The contract ensures the Boxer vehicles will be equipped with cable harnesses that will provide safe, reliable and mission-critical operation for British Army Boxer crews.

With a global presence across 80 countries, HUBER+SUHNER will carry out the work at its Oxfordshire and Staffordshire facilities, to ensure UK skilled manufacturing roles for the Boxer programme.

The contract will also support growth, including recruitment of additional roles in engineering and operations, with further recruitment planned over the coming years.

Think there are only 10 on order to date. But I suspect more will come.

What will be interesting is to see if the passive ADAD sensor gets a refresh. it's not only mounted on Stormer but also as a standalone mount for LML. As a passive system it has a lot of merit. Would have thought that it would make a lot of sense to have a similar setup on some RWS, particularly if you can update the sensor and also introduce some AI processing to rapidly identify targets.

Yes we would and I got it wrong 6 Brigades with 3 BBG's each would need 18 units so we would be looking at 28 radars as a starter

UK will produce 60 Boxer vehicles a year.

The United Kingdom is gearing up to manufacture up to 60 Boxer infantry armoured vehicles. These high-performance machinery will cater to both the needs of the British Army and markets across Europe and beyond.

Production of the Boxer Armored Fighting Vehicles [AFVs] will take place in facilities at Telford and Stockport. Current reports suggest that both plants are expanding their production capabilities to accommodate this new project. The UK has plans in place to acquire a total of 623 vehicles of this kind. The first batch of 117 vehicles will be made in Germany, while the remainder – a hefty 506 – will roll off the production lines in Telford and Stockport.

On July 19, the UK Ministry of Defence shared its plan to acquire between 400 and 600 Boxer vehicles. They’re even considering the possibility of adding up to 900 more. This could bump up the total purchasing number to a whopping 1500 units. Given the UK’s ambitious order and their renewed partnership, we’re now exploring potential local manufacturing and export opportunities for these Boxer vehicles.

Looks like additional order of Boxers might come soon(ish), but it would be less than number or of funded vehicles.

More broadly, the UK has decided against procuring close to an additional 400 vehicles, despite allocating funding for 1,016 platforms last year. A reduced figure has since been declared because of affordability issues, but several hundred are set to be ordered, according to the British Army presentation.

Industry has no appetite for accepting any risk in the supply chain. MoD has burned way too many matches on promises of large fleets and then placing small orders (AJAX, Foxhound etc etc). Then out that in the context of government finances and election year and no wonder they've put little effort into improving the supply chain for MoDs benefit.

Selected by the UK DoD as the Mechanised Infantry Vehicle in 2018, the new vehicle is close to deployment with the British Army, and new variants are envisaged.
