Man arrested outside Parliament
Image
(Metro)
A man has been detained by armed police officers at the gates of the Palace of Westminster.
Pictures from the scene show the man being pinned to the ground by police officers and Parliament has been put into lockdown. The carriage gates have been closed.

Reports from the scene suggested that armed officers ran from the grounds of parliament and that the man had been tasered.
It is also being reported that they shouted ‘knife, knife, knife’ before he was tackled and later put into a police van before the pavement was reopened a short term later.

London Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man in his 30s had been arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife at the Palace of Westminster.

The arrest happened yards from where Khalid Masood launched his attack killing PC Keith Palmer on 22nd March 2017.

BBC axes 'Crimewatch' after 33 years
Image
(BBC)
Crimewatch, one of the BBC's longest-running shows, is being axed after 33 years.

The programme, which asks viewers for help to track down criminals, is hosted by Jeremy Vine and Tina Daheley. The BBC said in a statement: "We are incredibly proud of Crimewatch and the great work it has done over the years. This move will also allow us to create room for new innovative programmes in peak time on BBC One." Daytime series Crimewatch Roadshow will continue.

"We believe the successful Crimewatch Roadshow format in daytime is the best fit for the brand going forward and we will increase the number of episodes to make two series a year," the BBC said. The Sun, which first broke the story, said ratings had suffered as it was scheduled against Cold Feet and Broadchurch. Three episodes have aired this year - in February and March - watched by an average of almost three million viewers. That is down from 14 million who watched at its peak.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, former Crimewatch presenter Nick Ross said: "I'm amazed that it's gone on for so long. And it's a tribute to the team they've kept it going. When it started, it was revolutionary. Up to that point, television and radio basically talked at the audience. There was no internet, very few phone-ins, this was a programme where the audience could talk back and could actually influence the end of the programme. This sort of revolutionary thing then had a huge impact on television generally and has kept going for 33 years despite all the changes in technology."
Ross said falling ratings had had an impact on crime-solving.

"If you get 15 million people watching a programme and you have an appeal, the chance of finding somebody, that one witness who saw something they had no idea was connected with the crime... they can ring in. Once your audience starts plummeting, you go back to two million, one million, your chances of finding that person are so remote."

Other previous Crimewatch presenters include Jill Dando, who was murdered in 1999 - with her own case being featured on the show.
Sue Cook, Kirsty Young, Fiona Bruce and Rav Wilding have also hosted the programme. Famous cases the show has featured and helped solve include the James Bulger murder, the killings of Lin and Megan Russell and the murder of schoolgirl Sarah Payne.

Man crashes car into Houses of Parliament barriers
Image
(Photo: BBC)

Metropolitan Police statement:
Statement from Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu in relation to this morning's incident in Westminster:

At 07:37hrs a silver Ford Fiesta was involved in a collision in front of the Houses of Parliament.

That vehicle collided with cyclists and pedestrians before hitting a barrier and coming to a stop.

Two people have been taken to hospital. One man has been discharged and one woman remains in hospital being treated for serious but thankfully, non-life threatening injuries.

Another man was also treated at the scene but didn’t require hospital treatment.

The driver of the Fiesta, who was alone in the vehicle, was arrested at the scene by armed officers who were already nearby.

The man, who is in his late 20s, was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences and has been taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody.

Given that this appears to be a deliberate act, the method and this being an iconic site, we are treating it as a terrorist incident and the investigation is being led by officers from the Counter Terrorism Command.

Officers are searching the vehicle and no other weapons have been found at this time.

At this early stage of the investigation, no other suspects at the scene have been identified or reported to police. There is no intelligence of further danger to Londoners or the rest of the UK in connection with this incident.

Our priority is to formally identify the suspect and establish his motivations if we can. He is not currently co-operating.

However, as you would expect, detectives from the Counter Terrorism Command are making various other urgent enquiries to ensure there is no outstanding risk to the public.

I would urge anyone who thinks they may have information that could assist the investigation to call police on 0800 789 321. Thank you to all the people who have already come forward.

Similarly, anybody who captured footage or images of the incident can download these to us via our website http://www.ukpoliceimageappeal.co.uk

We are treating the scene and Parliament Square as a crime scene. Cordons are likely to be in place for some time as the investigation team continues to carry out its important work to establish what happened.

I appreciate that this has caused a great deal of disruption to those who may live, work or be visiting the area, and I thank the public for their patience and understanding whilst we deal with this incident.

We will be working as quickly and diligently as possible in order to reopen the area, but in the meantime I would ask that the public avoid the area.

The safety of the public is our top priority and the Met Police will continue to do all we can to protect the people of London.

As always, the public should remain vigilant and if you see anything suspicious or something that causes concern, then please dial 999.

(BBC News)
The man arrested on suspicion of terror offences after a car crashed outside the Houses of Parliament has been named as Salih Khater by government sources.

The 29-year-old British citizen, originally from Sudan, has also been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, Met Police said on Wednesday.
He came to the UK as a refugee and was granted asylum, the BBC understands.

His brother described him as a "normal person" with no fanatical ideas, and no links to any religious group.
Abdullah Khater also said his family - who are originally from Darfur in Sudan - was in "a state of shock" over the incident.

Three people were injured after the car hit cyclists and pedestrians during Tuesday morning's rush hour. The silver Ford Fiesta then crashed into security barriers outside the Houses of Parliament just before 07:40 BST.

A man and a woman were taken to hospital after the crash and later discharged, while another man was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
