For everything else UK defence-related that doesn't fit into any of the sections above.

common calibre support artillery

Post by marktigger »

Casting round for a replacement for the 4.5in Mk8 it was proposed that a 155mm automatic gun be developed so that common natures could be used.
I'm sure the RA would also like a lightweight 155mm like the M777 to replace the 105mm L118. so yes the ideal solution would be a 155mm gun for the Navy and light and Armoured artillery. With standard ammunition across Land and Naval gunfire support. However technical problems and money have stopped this program.
Could a program go the other way taking the 127mm gun and turning it into a light field artillery piece?

that would be like insisting on going over the ramparts (hot tar and all the rest of the unpleasantness involved, when the gates are wide open (through shared munitions developmen)t:
http://defense-update.com/20130627_5-in ... fired.html

"The guided projectile is developed in the standard 5-Inch naval gun configuration and saboted 5-Inch variant sized for 155mm howitzers operated by the Army and Marine Corps. The naval Mk 45 Mod 4 five inch guns has been deployed worldwide with more than 25 navies. "
