Rather shocked by the amount of tests in the fifties and sixties. My mum used to be quite worried by the amount of tests and its only now that I appreciate her concerns. Where did all the fallout and radiation go?

Airburst it rose with the fireball and dispersed everywhere.
Underground test it stayed with the soil.

When alien's start practising geology in a million years time they will find a layer of slightly more radioactive rock as a result of our nuclear activities.

We had some dials at work which were destined to be fitted to an aircraft instrument. They had to be kept in a special container because they had glow in the dark paint on them. We also had a tin of paint used for marking said dials that was kept in a lead lined box, because there was sufficient there to give a deflection on a Geiger counter.

What Happened to the Nuclear Test Sites?

(Curious Droid)
Nuclear testing ended over 20 years ago but the legacy of the test areas still remains and will do for hundreds or thousands of years. 8 countries have actively tested nuclear weapons, some in their own backyard if it was big enough like the Soviet Union and the US but they also used others peoples backyards in the Pacific, the British and French did this.

But what happened to the test sites, in this video we look at the US and Soviet test programs and what became of them and the people nearby.

Russia has suspended its involvement in the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) following a similar decision by the US.

How the Atomic Race Was Won

(Curious Droid) 25th May 2019
It wasn't just the United States that made an atomic bomb in WW2. Five countries had active nuclear programs but the pressure of war, resources and leadership would ultimately determine the winner, this is the story of how the atomic race was won.

Britain's Nuclear Bomb: The Inside Story

(BBC)
In 1957, Britain exploded its first megaton hydrogen bomb - codenamed Operation Grapple X. It was the culmination of an extraordinary scientific project, which against almost insuperable odds turned Britain into a nuclear superpower. This is the inside story of how Britain got 'the bomb'.

The BBC was granted unprecedented access to the top-secret nuclear research facility at Aldermaston. The programme features interviews with veterans and scientists who took part in the atomic bomb programme, some speaking for the first time, and newly released footage of the British atomic bomb tests.

Third Atomic Bomb Attack - Japan 1945

(Mark Felton Prodictions) 9th August 2020
If Japan did not surrender on 15 August 1945, a third atomic bombing was planned. In this programme we examine how Japan's surrender was a complicated and difficult process involving a military coup and how America was reluctantly faced with potentially using the third bomb - but which city was to be targeted? And would it have ended the war?

Was wondering about the in-depth nature of that linked article, but at the end it is stated that it draws from a research project - a non-governmental one.

As for " neither clear whether the W93 program will eventually make it into the [US] budget proper, nor whether it would be taken up immediately by a potential incoming Joe Biden administration."
-USN continues the associated work (and is funded for it)
- more importantly, the backdrop for this is that if Biden gets elected, he has two weeks to decide how he will handle reSTART

Or remove the US sub-strategic weapons.

UK builds its own warheads at AWE but they are thee same design as the US warheads and get help from the US NNSA.

https://news.sky.com/story/ministers-to ... e-12120882

Ministers will this week move to seize control of the controversial contract responsible for manufacturing Britain's nuclear warheads in a move that insiders said reflected the influence of Dominic Cummings, the prime minister's top adviser.

Sky News has learnt that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) will announce in the coming days that it intends to effectively renationalise management of the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), which runs the Aldermaston factory in Berkshire.

The decision will come as a blow to Lockheed Martin, which holds a 51% stake in AWE Management, the outsourcer Serco and Jacobs Engineering, which own 24.5% each of the joint venture.

It is the wrong place for profiteering... next: a national fitting out facility for warships; may be?
