Re: HMNB Portsmouth (RN)
A great story, thank you for that!
"The dock was ready for initial flooding in September 1944 and pumps allowed the dock to be emptied of its 57,000,000 gallons (259,122,000 litres) of water in about four hours. The construction was sufficiently advanced to allow the emergency docking of HMS Illustrious on 2 March 1945, three weeks before the official opening by the Governor-General, the Duke of Gloucester on 24 March 1945. The graving dock was named in honour of Captain James Cook, R.N.
In the inauguration speech delivered at the opening ceremony the following was noted, "It was indeed a bold move at the time for Australia, which had no capital ships of her own, to decide to construct a dock for such ships."
- Oman of today: how to have a great navy on your shores
- when you only have corvettes of your own (not for the want of money; but manpower)

Ever-lasting truths: Multi-year budgets/ planning by necessity have to address the painful questions; more often than not the Either-Or prevails over Both-And.

^ Conclusive proof to those who ever doubted it, that Portsmouth is indeed on a seperate island. Portsea Island, not Great Britain.

Re: HMNB Portsmouth (RN)
Will the new gantry crane over 14 and 15 Docks be called "DAVID" the Destroyer in anticipation of "GOLIATH" the Giant being bought for installation over a proposed QEC capable Dry Dock.

Every summer....
Morons "tomb-stoning" off the Round Tower into water thats only 1.5m (4' 9") deep, into the main shipping lane of England's second busiest port.

Seems like a good place for the Press Gangs to lay in wait then. The "Morons" would be cured of their desire to Jump-in, once invited to do so in mid Atlantic. Whether they would prove to be of any use at all in today's Navy is another matter.
