Rheinmetall actually did an assessment and worked out that 1 Cheetah missile was cheaper than 1 standard engagement with AHEAD rounds...we all know missiles are expensive, but those exotic rounds are every bit as costly in practice.Tempest414 wrote: ↑03 Oct 2022, 18:16 The other to deal with UAV's and loiter weapons is to fit all RFA's with triple 40mm Mk-4's
Fort Vic doesn't have Artisan or any other 3d radar. She has a type 23 style mast to which it could be fitted but it never was. Just like the Sea Wolf launchers the basic silo was built amidships but never fitted out. There is currently a satcom antennae mounted on top of the defunct silo.
If we want to add a low cost missile to deal with UAV's and Loiter weapons why would we not use LMM or Starstreak we already use in service and proven on the battle fieldTimmymagic wrote: ↑03 Oct 2022, 19:31Rheinmetall actually did an assessment and worked out that 1 Cheetah missile was cheaper than 1 standard engagement with AHEAD rounds...we all know missiles are expensive, but those exotic rounds are every bit as costly in practice.Tempest414 wrote: ↑03 Oct 2022, 18:16 The other to deal with UAV's and loiter weapons is to fit all RFA's with triple 40mm Mk-4's
You could do. And it would clearly be very sensible to add the 4 round launcher to all of the MSI DS30M mounts (particularly as we have some spare due to the decision to order, but not fit, a number of mounts to the QE Class..).Tempest414 wrote: ↑04 Oct 2022, 08:47

what is a standard round pattern 5 rounds?

But Denel's Cheetah was even cheaper than Martlet, and was also radar guided. It could be used in circumstances where a visually cued missile like Martlet could not (really poor weather for example). A Land/Sea Ceptor compatible missile would also be useful for land based systems or ships without the MSI mount. A Land Ceptor battery could carry 7 standard CAMM and a 4 pack of Cheetah like missiles for self defence.
Cheetah is dead now, along with Denel, which is pretty much a zombie company these days as anyone with talent or skills has long ago left for the UAE.Tempest414 wrote: ↑04 Oct 2022, 08:47 What is the price point of Cheetah
The problem is if Cheetah was to come in for the RN & Army LMM and Starsteak would have to go also Radar guided has its problems with needing a radar capable of informing the missile
Now if Cheetah was set at a low price point could it be added a Phalanx to make a more affordable SeaRam
