Battlefield Helicopter

For everything else UK defence-related that doesn't fit into any of the sections above.

Battlefield Helicopter

Post by marktigger »

OK can someone give me a decent definition and examples because it would appear everything from an Agusta A109 to an NH90 or puma is classified as a battle field helicopter?

Observation and recce (as dedicated helos) seem to be a dying breed, so that also devalues "Light" as a category in
Light - Medium - Heavy.

Attack is clearly a category, but then Sikorsky Raider and Mi-28 are already "cross-overs". More to come?

So this sounds like battlefield helo = cars, with
Sport - Sedan - Estate,
plus cross-overs? as categories within.

I wonder about generic classifications vs. fit-outs for any chopper
- only two in the list can shed the fitout-level definition, and even a utility helicopter can be changed into a gunship within minutes (with a little bit of careful thought during the initial design, and kits stored back at the - field! - base)

@downsizer: a typical error= not paying attention to communicating with all relevant interest groups, eg. the MPs releasing funding (they will need to -be made! - to understand what it is for, and, if there is a gap that will hurt the overall capability)
