Mugabe was about to expire, China did not want to risk its influence by backing the extravagant, ex-gvmnt typist and now they have another 15 years of back seat driving ahead, without (visibly) exposing their policies or backing for any criticism.

Emmerson Mnangagwa sworn in as Zimbabwe's president. Crowds are gathering at a 60,000-seat stadium in Harare. It follows the downfall of Robert Mugabe after 37 years in power. The former president will not be attending. Mugabe's finance minister has reportedly been beaten up. The army and ruling party intervened forcing Mr Mugabe to quit. Events prompted by Mr Mnangagwa's sacking as vice-president.
