Jackal and Coyote MWMIK (Army)

Jackal MWMIK

The Jackal or MWMIK (pronounced EmWimmick) or Mobility Weapon-Mounted Installation Kit is a family of vehicles designed and developed by Supacat Ltd at their factory in Honiton, Devon (UK) for use by the British Army and Royal Air Force Regiment.

The primary role of the vehicle in the British Army is deep battlespace reconnaissance, rapid assault and fire support - roles where mobility, endurance and manoeuvrability are important - and it has also been used for convoy protection. The MWMIK can carry increased payload and fuel compared to its predecessor, allowing it to carry greater amounts of additional equipment and protection over longer distances, and it is able to support itself and its crew for distances of over 497 mi (800 km).

According to the Ministry of Defence, the Jackal "was built to meet the British Army's specific requirements for an agile, well-armed, light patrol vehicle." The vehicle's height-adjustable air suspension system can be lowered onto the bump-stops to provide a stable firing platform when stationary or raised to a maximum 380mm ground clearance allowing it to clear large obstacles. The high levels of off-road mobility enable troops to avoid more conventional routes which may be subject to ambush or enemy reconnaissance.

The vehicle is based on the HMT (High Mobility Truck) 400 high-mobility 4×4 design developed by a former subsidiary of Supacat, now built under licence from Lockheed Martin. The chassis is built by Universal Engineering Ltd, the engine by Cummins, the transmission by Allison, the suspension shock absorbers by Fox Racing Shox and the electronics package by Fujitsu and Smartgauge Electronics. The blast and ballistic armour packages, and the blast mitigating seating were designed and built by Jankel Armouring Ltd. The vehicles can be fitted with a range of weapons, such as a 12.7 mm Heavy Machine Gun, 7.62 mm General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and 40 mm Automatic Grenade Launcher alongside an additional GPMG and personal weapons carried by the crew.

The Jackal is capable of maintaining off-road speeds of up to 49 mph (79 km/h) and can reach a top speed of 80 mph (130 km/h).

Coyote Tactical Support Vehicle

Coyote Tactical Support Vehicles are a larger 6x6 design with more than 70 ordered as medium load carriers, artillery tractors and a range of other platform variants.

The Coyote tactical support vehicle (TSV light) is based on the HMT 600 6×6 chassis from Supacat and is a larger derivative of the Jackal 2, the two vehicles are designed to be complementary. The extra two wheels give a heavier vehicle approaching 10,500 kg (10.3 long tons) which will act in support of the Jackal 2 and allow transportation of supplies and equipment over similar terrain (the payload for supplies and equipment will be 1.5t). The Coyote has been designed to fulfil the role of a light tactical service vehicle.

The British Army has commited to keeping 400 Jackal 2's and 70 Coyote's in the core budget from Afghanistan out of a larger purchase during the theatre.

Norway Picks Supacat High-Mobility Vehicle

http://www.defensenews.com/story/defens ... /70877170/
Norway has ordered HMT Extenda vehicles from British maker Supacat under a deal valued at £23 million (US $34.8 million), including support, to bolster the mobility of its land forces.

In its announcement Wednesday, the company did not say how many vehicles were involved, but added it had an option to double the order.

Deliveries will begin next year and be completed in 2019.

Used by special operations forces, the Extenda order for Norway comes just over eight months after Australia signed up a AUS $105 million (US $82.8 million) deal with Supacat for delivery of 89 of the high-mobility machines. The Australian vehicles (pictured above) are for use in the special operations role and add to an earlier order for Supacat HMT series machines.

Norway joins Denmark as the second Nordic country to operate the HMT family of vehicles.
Supacat is really turning into a real export success. A large purchase domestically is one thing, but Australia is now ordering its second batch, Denmark bought into them and now Norway is as well. The US was once interested but...hah...who ever expects them to not buy domestic?

Makes you wonder if Supacat is paying attention to the French wanting a new special forces vehicle. The HMT series is a picture perfect element with its success. That order is for, if I remember, 200 vehicles. Maybe we can get something back on this whole "buy from each other" thing we have right now.

A good question, as Pinzgauer was/is about the largest vehicle that can be airdropped, using the platform that goes together with the Hercs.

I hope to be corrected, but there is no such platform (yet?)for A400Ms? Dropping artilery to support the first wave of light forces was a focal point for a joint US/UK exercise recently, on the other side of the pond. Lessons learnt/ development contracts or orders? Nothing has caught my eye.

Under Army 2020, Jackal & Coyote are set to play an increasingly significant role in the Future Army Structure as three cavalry regiments * are permanently converting to them as 'Light Formation Reconnaissance' units.

* The Queens Dragoon Guards, Light Dragoons, And Royal Scots Dragoon Guards

I'm under the impression that there currently is no platform capability at all, as it was a C-130K thing, and the RAF C-130J can't do it. It is another of those stealth cuts which do not make the news. In the US, they dropped stuff, but from american C-130s and related kit, if i understood correctly.

The capability to aidrop vehicles should re-appear with A400, possibly using american Type V platforms, but it will take time. A while ago there were reports of the requirement being to be able to airdrop Jackal, and since they now are the main fighty vehicles of the parachute battalions, it is easy to see why.

Putting together that the three light cavalry rgmnts and the paras use of the same 400 + 70 Jackal and Coyote pool, how do the numbers stack up?
- I take it there is still the "airlanded" armour support allocated to 16X (in practice, the 2 and 3 Para)?

Really, they should have something like this
http://tanknutdave.com/russian-2s25-spu ... destroyer/
- the Ruskie Sheridan... just much better

There was once a tank that could have fitted the bill by Vickers.

Image

Vickers VFM Mk5. A 19-20 ton light tank with an L7 105mm gun. Speedy little thing. Info and video here:

http://www.military-today.com/tanks/vfm_5.htm

Was an entry for the American program that resulted in the M8 Bedford. American co-developed with us too. Pity it never came to anything.

There isn't anymore. The tie with the Household Cavalry has been severed by the SDSR 2010 cuts. The Household will only be able to carry out its role as recce cavalry for the armoured infantry brigade.

Jackal & Coyote, the LRDG would have loved them!
While I think they have their place with Special Forces and light infantry I don't understand their use by Light Cavalry Regiments. As far as I can see they are a backwards step from CVR(T).

I would agree but so is scout its to big and heavy, we should have goten Pirannah variant like the canadian coyote back in the 1990's

the British coyote I thing would be a good guntractor vehicle for the light gun.

Doesn't look like it. I've just been watching a battery of light guns barrelling across Salisbury Plain behind a bunch of Pinzgauers!

I do wonder if the Jackal/Coyote will evolve into the Landrover/pinzgauer replacement?

Supacat Australia secures vehicle order from New Zealand

http://www.janes.com/article/63454/supa ... ew-zealand

The Australian subsidiary of UK vehicle manufacturer Supacat has secured a contract from New Zealand to supply high-mobility vehicles to the New Zealand Special Air Service (SAS) regiment.

The New Zealand Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on 6 September that Supacat Australia will supply an unspecified number of vehicles to meet part of a requirement to replace the regiment's existing Pinzgauer Light Operational Vehicles

--

Supacat continues to be the running success for the British light vehicle sector.

Excellent, I wonder if they nicked this one
"The gun towing concept demonstrator also has a flat bed at the rear, which can accommodate a payload of up to 4,000 kg."
from the old Himars [EDIT: should have put Himars in quotation marks, not to mix that one up with the REAL Himars] demonstrator? In that role the axels were not quite up to it (the load) in x-country riding.

This trialling (may be even ordering?) special versions must mean that the allocation of the base models (of which there are plenty) has been decided by type of unit (which will now be made self-supporting in the field).

The flat bed version could be useful for other cargo.

The Scots Dragoon Guards have had the Jackal, or MWMIK, for three-and-a-half years, and now they have had a chance to try it out in some specialised terrain. Working with UAE forces as part of Exercise Desert Falcon, the Scots DG have been able to practice driving in the desert mountains.

Reservist soldiers from The Royal Yeomanry in Shropshire have received their first Jackal reconnaissance vehicle. It has taken a while for the vehicle to reach reservists, but a special delivery in Telford marks the start of their roll-out and their conversion from using their old armoured vehicles.

Wasn't sure where to put this but as suggested in the article, this sort of weapon system could be useful to our SF.

Jackals upgraded with Thermal Masts. That's a HUGE capability leap for their role, and one sorely overlooked for years.

Watched them being built and tested in Devonport NB, also have ex colleagues who used them on deployments.
They seemed to think they were just fine.
