Farewell Deltics, hello Caterpillars as Brocklesby passes refit milestone
After more than 30 years powering HMS Brocklesby safely around the globe, trusty Deltic engines – the same once used by British Rail in locomotives – have been replaced by fuel-efficient Caterpillars.
The Hunt-class minehunter is the latest to receive a mid-life revamp in Portsmouth which will keep her in service until the 2030s.
In the Portsmouth ship hall built to construct the bow sections of Type 45 destroyers (about 400 tonnes heavier, but ten metres shorter) and extended for gigantic segments of carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales, HMS Brocklesby receives the most substantial revamp in her 33-year history.
She’s the latest ship in her class to receive the year-long overhaul which will help extend the life of the Hunts well into the 2030s.
Her sisters received the mid-life upgrade exposed to the elements, but with the hall now turned into part of BAE’s ‘Minor War Vessels Centre of Specialisation’, Brocklesby escapes the vagaries of the British weather.
That said, it will still take 190,000 ‘man hours’ – that’s the equivalent of one person toiling continuously for more than 21 years – to carry out all the work required to return the ship to fighting order (some 9,000 maintenance tasks in all).

hmmm a long refit could return the Hunts we sold to new standards if we could swop them for Sandowns and return the HMS raleigh training ship to service.

Good picture of HMS Brecon at Raleigh, interesting to see it with the deck cleared. Can start to see how they can be MHC motherships. Would be good to get Brecon active again.

yep, plenty of room on the back for a pair of autonomous boats, they look like they will make a good interim platform before their eventual replacement.

constructed from what? steel or GRP?
would something like a 76mm get past the bean counters or would they argue a ds30 was sufficient?
Flight deck useful but again would bean counters say excessive?

A few interesting points from the release of the VENARI-85 design...
1. The design appears to follow much of current MOD thinking, providing a very flexible ship design for future MCM, survey and HADR etc. The 85 refers to an overall length of 85.9 m; I'd be interested to see a figure for the design's displacement. As well as displacement other basic details about the ship (speed, range, crew numbers, etc.) are not given. This underlines that this is a ship concept, intended to provoke thought and discussion, and is some way behind the maturity of say the Venator design.
2. There has been a clear shift from the Venator 90 to a ship with a broader beam, better able to handle larger UXVs.
3. The BMT web site has a interesting technical brief available, which highlights the design has much higher survivability than OPVs and much better low speed manoeuvrability than light frigates.
4. A number of weapon options are discussed - but only guns and not CAMM. The Venator 90 design included CAMM.
5. These details have all been released a few days prior to DSEI - but also a few days before the National Shipbuilding Strategy is released. Could this mean the strategy will cover the MHC...

VENARI-85 could be deployed as an ASW surveillance capability in a nation’s
own waters to monitor and deter another nation’s submarines, thereby
releasing the more expensive Frigates and their higher levels of specialist ASW
capability to be employed in more demanding operations globally.
Interesting pitch, and one that would resonate with the RN for TAPS. The 57mm option and some of the pics also suggest targeting Scandinavian / Baltic countries. If I was looking for an export niche this would be better than another light frigate...

Give the Venari 85 a Merlin flight deck with a Wildcat Hanger and I'd be a pretty happy bunny.
Tick the option boxes for The ability to deploy a variable depth and towed array sonar from the ship and host the necessary processing equipment.
and The optional hull-mounted mine avoidance sonar
Then it only needs FFBNW a CAMM (24-32 missile) installation, either two 3-cell Lockheed Martin ExLS VLS or a single 8cell mk41 (not strike length) and it'd be awesome!

With the proliferation of submarines and exposure to mines in areas like the gulf then there should be a strong export market, not only for the ship but also the off board systems.
At this stage though id keep CAMM away from the design - would see this ship as either a UK EEZ MHPC or straight MCM replacement - would still need a global patrol frigate / sloop and / or more T26s.
